Red Bulls Face Surging Chicago Fire on Fireworks Night Sat. 8/22/26
Aug 21, 2026
Red Bull New York returns to the Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday, August 22, 2026, for an important Eastern Conference matchup against Chicago Fire FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Harrison, NJ.
The game pits a Red Bulls squad fighting to strengthen its playoff position against one of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer. Chicago enters Saturday in third place in the Eastern Conference, while the Red Bulls hold eighth place. MLS has selected the matchup as its Walmart Saturday Showdown.
For Harrison residents, the game also means another evening of increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic around Sports Illustrated Stadium. The Harrison Police Department has issued a Sports Illustrated Stadium Traffic Bulletin in connection with Saturday's match, alerting residents and motorists to prepare for game-related traffic in the stadium area. Rain is expected Saturday, and the last two rainstorms caused flooding around the Harrison PATH station, so bring your rain boots.
Fireworks Night Comes to Harrison Weather Permitting
Fans attending Saturday's game will get more than 90 minutes of soccer. The Red Bulls have designated the Chicago match as Fireworks Night, presented by Audi, with a fireworks display planned as part of the evening's festivities. The club's official 2026 theme-night schedule specifically lists the August 22 Chicago game as Fireworks Night. Forecasted rain may dampen the fireworks for another night.
The fireworks promotion makes Saturday one of the Red Bulls' special-event home dates this season. The team's published theme-night information does not identify a separate promotional giveaway for the August 22 match, so fans should not confuse Fireworks Night with some of the club's giveaway-oriented promotions on other dates. As always, promotions and matchday activities can be subject to change.
The game comes just three days after the Red Bulls hosted first-place Nashville SC in Harrison. Nashville handed New York a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat Wednesday night, scoring the game's only goal in second-half stoppage time. The loss dropped New York's record to 7-9-4 with 25 points.
Chicago Fire Arrives as One of MLS's Hottest Teams
Chicago Fire FC comes to Harrison with considerable momentum. The Fire defeated Orlando City SC 2-1 on Wednesday, August 19, improving to 11-6-2 with 35 points. Even more impressive, the victory was Chicago's sixth consecutive MLS win.
Chicago is coached by Gregg Berhalter and has emerged as a serious Eastern Conference contender. The club also made international headlines with the addition of Polish superstar Robert Lewandowski, who has quickly made his presence felt. MLS reports that Lewandowski has scored three goals in his first five league appearances for Chicago.
Chicago Fire FC was founded in 1997 and began MLS play the following year, winning the MLS Cup during its inaugural 1998 season. The club takes its name from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and has long been one of Major League Soccer's recognizable original-era franchises.
Soldier Field Is Chicago Fire's Current Home
Chicago currently plays most of its home matches at Soldier Field, located along Chicago's lakefront at 1410 Special Olympics Drive. Soldier Field is also the longtime home of the NFL's Chicago Bears. Chicago Fire returned to the stadium beginning with the 2020 season.
Soldier Field has a listed capacity of approximately 61,500 spectators, making it considerably larger than Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison.
The Fire's relationship with Soldier Field, however, is heading toward an end. Chicago is developing a new, privately financed, soccer-specific stadium expected to open in 2028. The club broke ground on the project in 2026.
Scheduling conflicts with the Chicago Bears can also occasionally force the Fire to relocate home matches. For example, Chicago has already announced that its November 7, 2026 match against Columbus Crew will be played at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview because of a Bears scheduling conflict.
Sports Illustrated Stadium Is the Red Bulls' Home
The Red Bulls have a very different stadium situation. Their permanent home is Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, the soccer-specific facility that opened in 2010 as Red Bull Arena before being renamed Sports Illustrated Stadium.
The stadium has a capacity of about 25,000 seats and was designed specifically for soccer. Its partially enclosed roof and seating configuration place spectators relatively close to the field, creating an intimate environment compared with much larger multipurpose stadiums such as Soldier Field.
The stadium has also undergone significant upgrades for the 2026 season, including improvements to the concourse and new premium and group spaces.
Located only a short distance from the Harrison PATH Station, Sports Illustrated Stadium has helped make Harrison a regional destination for professional soccer. That proximity to mass transit is particularly important on nights when thousands of fans arrive in Harrison within a relatively short period before kickoff. Route 280 and the New Jersey Turnpike are not far from the Stadium. In addition, Route 21 is very close and the Garden State Parkway without traffic is 20 minutes away.
Chicago Third, Red Bulls Eighth in Eastern Conference
Saturday's game carries important implications in the Eastern Conference standings. Following Wednesday's games, Chicago Fire FC sits third in the Eastern Conference with 35 points and an 11-6-2 record. Chicago's recent six-game winning streak has transformed the Fire into one of the conference's most dangerous teams.
The Red Bulls enter Saturday eighth with 25 points and a 7-9-4 record after Wednesday's 1-0 loss to Nashville.
That ten-point difference makes Saturday especially important for New York. The Red Bulls are currently in a playoff spot, but with teams immediately behind them competing for postseason qualification, every available point becomes increasingly important in the second half of the MLS schedule.
Chicago, meanwhile, has a different objective. The Fire are trying to remain among the Eastern Conference leaders and potentially move closer to the teams occupying the top two positions.
Red Bulls Won First Meeting This Season
New York has one significant reason for confidence Saturday: the Red Bulls already defeated Chicago this season.
The clubs met in Chicago on May 9, 2026, with the Red Bulls earning an impressive 3-1 road victory. Jorge Ruvalcaba opened the scoring just before halftime, Cade Cowell added another shortly after the break, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting converted a penalty in the 81st minute. Hugo Cuypers scored Chicago's lone goal in the 87th minute.
The teams split their two regular-season meetings in 2025. The Red Bulls defeated Chicago 2-1 in Harrison on April 5, 2025, while Chicago responded with a 1-0 home victory on July 26, 2025.
That recent history suggests there may not be much separating the clubs when they meet head-to-head, despite Chicago's advantage in this year's standings.
Saturday's game therefore gives the Red Bulls an opportunity to complete a 2026 regular-season sweep of Chicago while also picking up three valuable points in the playoff race.
Harrison Police Issues Traffic Bulletin
The Harrison Police Department has issued a Sports Illustrated Stadium Traffic Bulletin for Saturday's game, as thousands of soccer fans are expected to travel into Harrison before the 7:30 p.m. kickoff and leave the stadium area around the same time after the match and fireworks.
Residents traveling through the area surrounding Sports Illustrated Stadium and the Harrison PATH Station should anticipate heavier-than-normal traffic, increased pedestrian activity and possible traffic controls before and after the match.
Motorists who do not need to travel through the immediate stadium area may want to use alternate routes, particularly during the period immediately before kickoff and after the game.
For those attending the match, public transportation remains an alternative to driving, with the Harrison PATH Station within walking distance of Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Saturday night should offer plenty of activity in Harrison: an Eastern Conference battle between the Red Bulls and a surging Chicago Fire team, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, Fireworks Night and another large crowd descending on the Sports Illustrated Stadium neighborhood.
For the Red Bulls, however, the most important fireworks may be the ones they can create on the field as they attempt to rebound from Wednesday's last-minute loss to Nashville and hand third-place Chicago its first league defeat in seven matches.
