Red Bulls Face MLS-Leading Nashville SC in Harrison NJ
Aug 19, 2026
The New York Red Bulls return to Major League Soccer action Wednesday night, August 19, 2026, when they host Eastern Conference-leading Nashville SC at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The midweek matchup begins a three-game homestand for the Red Bulls and presents New York with one of its toughest assignments of the season. Nashville arrives in Harrison not merely leading the Eastern Conference but sitting atop the overall MLS standings, while the Red Bulls are fighting to improve their position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
A Special Pre-Match Event for Fans
Wednesday's game includes an unusual pre-match promotion combining soccer and books.
The Red Bulls are hosting New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey for an exclusive pre-match question-and-answer session before the Nashville game. Fans purchasing the specialty ticket package will receive a goodie bag containing book-themed merchandise, while 10 attendees will win a Tessa Bailey book along with Red Bulls merchandise.
The promotion is associated with a specialty ticket package rather than being advertised as a stadium-wide giveaway to everyone attending the match.
Fans looking for fireworks will have to wait a few more days. The Red Bulls' next home match, against Chicago Fire FC on Saturday, August 22, has been designated Fireworks Night presented by Audi.
Nashville SC Comes to Harrison Atop MLS
Nashville SC enters Wednesday's match as one of the strongest teams in Major League Soccer this season.
The club comes to Harrison with a 13-2-4 record and 43 points, giving Nashville the best record in MLS entering the match. Nashville strengthened its position at the top of the table Saturday with an impressive 4-1 victory over Inter Miami CF at GEODIS Park.
Nashville's attack will provide a significant test for the Red Bulls' defense. Hany Mukhtar scored twice against Miami and was subsequently named MLS Player of the Matchday. Sam Surridge has also been in strong scoring form, while Nashville's roster sent four players — Brian Schwake, Andy Najar, Surridge and Mukhtar — to this year's MLS All-Star Game.
Nashville SC, nicknamed the Boys in Gold, joined MLS in 2020. The team plays its home matches at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
Opened in 2022, GEODIS Park is one of the most impressive soccer-specific facilities in Major League Soccer. Nashville's Metropolitan Sports Authority lists the stadium's capacity at 30,109 spectators, while the stadium itself generally describes it as a 30,000-seat facility and the largest soccer-specific stadium in the United States and Canada.
Red Bulls Looking to Protect Their Home Field
The New York Red Bulls enter Wednesday's game with a 7-8-4 record and 25 points. The club is therefore well behind Nashville in the standings and needs points as it attempts to strengthen its position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
One player Harrison fans will want to watch is young Red Bulls attacker Julian Hall, who has emerged as one of the breakout players of the 2026 season. Hall has recorded nine goals and five assists in 19 matches. Veteran captain Emil Forsberg has also been productive lately, scoring in consecutive matches and recording six goal contributions over his last seven MLS appearances entering Wednesday.
The Red Bulls have had mixed results recently, however. Nashville's match preview notes that New York's previous six league matches included losses to Atlanta, Charlotte and Philadelphia, victories over Orlando and Kansas City, and a draw against New York City FC.
Sports Illustrated Stadium
The Red Bulls play their home games at Sports Illustrated Stadium, formerly known as Red Bull Arena, on South Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard in Harrison.
The 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium opened in March 2010 and has developed a reputation as one of the country's premier soccer venues. Its design places the first row of spectators only about 21 feet from the touchline, helping create an intimate atmosphere for soccer despite the stadium's relatively large capacity.
In addition to serving as the home of the Red Bulls, the Harrison stadium has hosted the United States men's and women's national teams and numerous prominent international clubs and national teams over the years.
Wednesday's game will therefore match two clubs that play in purpose-built soccer stadiums: Nashville in its approximately 30,000-seat GEODIS Park and the Red Bulls in Harrison's 25,000-seat Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Red Bulls Have Historically Had Nashville's Number
History favors New York in this matchup, although Nashville broke through against the Red Bulls last season.
The clubs have met eight times previously in MLS regular-season play. The Red Bulls have recorded three victories, four draws and only one loss against Nashville. Even more significantly for Wednesday's game, Nashville has never won at Sports Illustrated Stadium, going winless in four previous trips to Harrison.
The teams met twice during the 2025 MLS regular season.
On March 1, 2025, the Red Bulls defeated Nashville 2-0 at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Mohammed Sofo opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Emil Forsberg added another goal in the 30th minute.
Nashville got its revenge when the clubs met again at GEODIS Park on May 14, 2025, defeating New York 2-1. It was Nashville's first MLS victory over the Red Bulls.
That makes Wednesday's match Nashville's latest opportunity to accomplish something it has never done: leave Harrison with an MLS victory over the Red Bulls.
Nashville Has Much More at Stake Than Just the Series
The difference in the standings adds another dimension to Wednesday night's game.
Nashville arrives with 43 points compared with New York's 25, an 18-point difference entering the match. Nashville is trying to protect its position atop both the Eastern Conference and MLS overall, while New York needs points to improve its playoff position.
For Nashville, a road victory would demonstrate that its impressive season can continue in a stadium where the club has historically struggled.
For New York, defeating the league leaders would provide an important boost as the Red Bulls begin a stretch of three consecutive home matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Harrison Residents Should Expect Game-Day Traffic
As with other heavily attended soccer matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium, Harrison residents and motorists should be prepared for increased traffic before and after Wednesday night's game.
The Harrison Police Department has regularly issued Sports Illustrated Stadium — formerly Red Bull Arena — traffic bulletins in connection with stadium events. Residents should therefore watch for any traffic advisory issued by the Harrison Police Department concerning temporary road restrictions, traffic-control measures or other changes around the stadium.
The heaviest traffic can generally be expected in the period leading up to the 7:30 p.m. kickoff and again immediately after the match ends. Motorists traveling through the area around South Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard, Cape May Street, Guyon Drive and the Harrison PATH Station should allow additional travel time.
With a midweek evening kickoff occurring during a period when commuters are also returning through the Harrison PATH Station, the combination of commuter and stadium traffic could make the area particularly busy.
Wednesday Night in Harrison
Wednesday's match offers Harrison-area soccer fans an opportunity to see the team currently sitting at the top of Major League Soccer come into Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Nashville SC arrives with a 13-2-4 record and 43 points, while the Red Bulls enter at 7-8-4 with 25 points. But the standings tell only part of the story. Nashville has yet to win an MLS match in Harrison, while New York has historically been one of Nashville's most difficult opponents.
Whether Nashville finally breaks through in Harrison or the Red Bulls once again protect their home field will be decided Wednesday night.
