Harrison Memorial Day 2024: So Nobody Forgets Reading Of Names

May 24, 2024

On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the Town of Harrison gathered in solemn remembrance for the annual Memorial Day Tribute in the center of town at the Veterans Plaza in Library Park. The event, sponsored by Harrison Post No. 282 American Legion and the Sgt. William Sawelson VFW Post 340, brought together the community to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

So Nobody Forgets

One of the highlights of the event was the poignant reading of the names of fallen soldiers. Retired Lieutenant Dave Doyle of the Harrison Police Department took to the podium to deliver the solemn roll call, which included additional information on the age and manner of death, as well as the honors bestowed upon particular soldiers. This personal touch brought a deeper sense of connection and respect to the proceedings, reminding attendees of the individual lives and stories behind each name. The Master of Ceremony noted that each year the names are read “so nobody forgets” the sacrifices made by residents of Harrison and throughout the United States of America.

The event saw a large contingency of present and retired Harrison Police and Harrison Fire Department personnel, underscoring the community's commitment to honoring its heroes. Members of the public and veterans also turned out in significant numbers, creating a powerful display of unity and remembrance. While several Town of Harrison Council members were in attendance to pay their respects, the absence of Mayor James Fife was noted.

The ceremony served not only as a tribute to the fallen but also as a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many to protect the freedoms enjoyed by all. As the names were read and memories were honored, the community of Harrison stood together, united in their respect and appreciation for those who gave their lives in service to the country. The ceremony was concluded with the playing of Taps on a Trumpet by Athen Rivera and Amazing Grace on Bagpipe by James (Jim) Woods.

This Memorial Day Tribute was a testament to the enduring spirit of remembrance and the town's unwavering commitment to honoring its heroes. As the event concluded, the echoes of the names read lingered in the air, a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the bravery of those who defend it.
