October is recognized nationwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to education, support, and raising funds for breast cancer research and treatment. Communities like Harrison, NJ join together each year to honor survivors, support those currently battling the disease, and remember loved ones lost to breast cancer.

The Origins of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in October 1985 through a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca). The founders’ goals were to promote early detection through regular mammograms, increase public awareness of the disease, and reduce the stigma surrounding breast cancer discussions.

Over the decades, the pink ribbon has become the movement’s international symbol, with the Susan G. Komen Foundation and other organizations playing a major role in promoting awareness and fundraising. Today, Breast Cancer Awareness Month encompasses a range of activities, from nationwide walks and runs to educational campaigns and community-based events, such as the one held in Harrison.

Goals and Activities of the Awareness Campaign

The focus of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is threefold:

  • Encouraging early detection and screening. Public campaigns highlight the importance of mammograms and self-exams.
  • Supporting research and treatment. Fundraising events provide critical resources for advancing medical research and new therapies.
  • Providing patient support. Organizations offer emotional and financial assistance to those undergoing treatment and their families.

Events like Race for the Cure, survivor support groups, and local flag-raising ceremonies ensure that the message of awareness, hope, and solidarity reaches as many people as possible.

The Harrison Cancer League’s Ongoing Work

Locally, the Harrison Cancer League has been a steadfast presence in supporting families touched by cancer. For years, the organization has raised funds for cancer research, provided assistance to patients in need, and helped connect residents with resources for treatment and support. The League is known not only for its fundraising initiatives but also for its compassionate, hands-on involvement with community members facing health challenges.

Flag Raising at Harrison Town Hall

On Friday, October 3, 2025, the Town of Harrison joined the national observance with a special Breast Cancer Awareness flag raising at Town Hall. The ceremony brought together residents, local officials, members of the Harrison Cancer League, and survivors to honor the resilience of those affected by the disease. The pink flag, raised high above Harrison Town Hall, stands as a symbol of hope and community solidarity.

A Community Standing Together

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, the Harrison Cancer League encourages residents to participate in awareness activities, wear pink to show support, and most importantly, ensure that family and friends stay proactive about screenings and early detection.

In Harrison, the flag waving over Town Hall is more than a banner. It is a message of unity, resilience, and the promise to keep fighting until a cure is found.
