Gotham Hosts Portland Thorns Fri. 8/28/26 for Pride Night in Harrison

Gotham FC returns to Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison on Friday, August 28, 2026, for one of its biggest home matches of the season, hosting Portland Thorns FC in an 8 p.m. National Women’s Soccer League showdown that combines a battle near the top of the standings with Gotham's annual Pride celebration.

The match pits first-place Gotham against third-place Portland at a critical point in the race for the NWSL Shield. Gotham enters Friday with a 13-3-5 record and 44 points, seven points ahead of both the Washington Spirit and Portland, which enters at 11-6-4 with 37 points. Washington holds second place over Portland on goal difference.

For Harrison residents, the game also means another busy event night around Sports Illustrated Stadium and the PATH station area. The Harrison Police Department has issued a traffic bulletin in connection with Friday night's game, and motorists should anticipate increased traffic in the stadium area before and after the 8 p.m. kickoff.

Gotham Trying to Protect First Place
Gotham comes home carrying a nine-match unbeaten streak, tying the club record, after playing Angel City FC to a scoreless draw last Sunday. A victory Friday would extend that run to a club-record 10 matches and, more importantly, give Gotham additional breathing room in the Shield race.

Friday is also Gotham's final home game before a three-match road swing. The club travels to face Denver Summit FC on September 6, 2026, Racing Louisville FC on September 11 and North Carolina Courage on September 19, 2026, before returning to Harrison against Chicago Stars FC on September 25, 2026.

One major absence Friday will be midfielder Rose Lavelle. Lavelle suffered a head injury during the first half of Sunday's match against Angel City and is in the league's concussion protocol. Acting head coach Shaun Harris confirmed that she will not be available against Portland. The challenge is significant because Portland comes to Harrison riding its own three-match winning streak. The Thorns have continued winning despite losing midfielder Olivia Moultrie to a season-ending ACL injury. Sophia Wilson has been an important part of Portland's attack, while Gotham counters with the league's stingiest defense.

The teams have already demonstrated how evenly matched they can be. Their earlier 2026 meeting ended in a 2-2 draw.
Friday also marks an interesting NWSL milestone: Gotham and Portland are reaching their 300th regular-season matches, making them the first of the league's original franchises to reach that mark.

Midge Purce Reaches Career Milestone
Another storyline involves Gotham veteran Midge Purce, who is set to make her 150th career NWSL regular-season appearance.
Mandy Freeman is also back in Gotham's starting lineup. With Lavelle unavailable, Jaedyn Shaw moves into the midfield, while Guro Reiten shifts to the left side of the attack.
Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger enters the match with another potential record within reach. Her shutout against Angel City was her 10th of the season. Another clean sheet Friday would give Gotham 14 shutouts in 2026 and add to what has become one of the league's most difficult defenses to break down.

Who Are the Portland Thorns?
Portland Thorns FC is one of the founding clubs of the NWSL. The organization was established in 2012 in preparation for the new league and began playing during the NWSL's inaugural 2013 season.
The Thorns have subsequently become one of women's professional soccer's most successful franchises. Portland has won three NWSL Championships in 2013, 2017, and 2022, as well as NWSL Shields in 2016 and 2021 and the 2021 Challenge Cup. Portland plays its home games at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. The historic stadium is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026 and has undergone several major renovations during its long history. A 2019 expansion increased its seating capacity to 25,218. That makes the Thorns' home remarkably similar in size to Friday night's venue. Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison seats approximately 25,000 spectators and has been Gotham's primary home as well as the home of the New York Red Bulls. The Harrison stadium opened in March 2010 and was known as Red Bull Arena until the Sports Illustrated Stadium naming agreement took effect in December 2024. The Town of Harrison did not receive any proceeds from the stadium name change.

Pride Night Takes Over Sports Illustrated Stadium
Friday isn't simply another home match. Gotham has designated the Portland game as its annual Pride Match, presented by Flamingo, with festivities beginning hours before kickoff.
The giveaway should encourage fans to arrive early. The first 5,000 fans entering Sports Illustrated Stadium will receive a Pride fan and an exclusive fanny pack courtesy of Flamingo, according to Gotham's current match information.
Fan Fest begins at 5:30 p.m., two-and-a-half hours before kickoff. Activities are scheduled to include a Pride sign-making station and photo booth, an interactive digital trading-card booth, a mini soccer pitch, a bead bar, and other sponsor activities. Fans will also have an opportunity connected to RE-INC, including merchandise and a customization experience. The pregame entertainment continues with a Drag Soirée beginning at 6 p.m. in the Hype House, featuring performers from the New York City drag scene.

Christen Press and Tobin Heath to Light the Torch
Two familiar names in American women's soccer will have a prominent role in the pregame ceremonies.

World Cup champions and Olympic gold medalists Tobin Heath and Christen Press are scheduled to participate in Gotham's signature torch-lighting ceremony. Tony and Grammy Award-winning performer Lauren Patten and Flamingo mascot Phoebe are also scheduled to participate in the ceremony.

Drag performer and singer Jan Sport, known for appearances on RuPaul's Drag Race and RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, returns to Gotham's Pride celebration for a third consecutive year to perform the national anthem. Other activities promoted for the evening include tooth gems, caricature artists and special Pride merchandise. The entertainment continues at halftime with "Strut Your Pride." Ten selected fans will walk onto the field for a fashion-show-style Pride celebration featuring colorful outfits, music and dancing. And Gotham has teased another possibility. Pride proposals have become something of a tradition at the stadium, and the club has playfully raised the question of whether a proposal will occur for the third consecutive Pride Match.

Gotham's Harrison Era Is Coming to an End
Friday's match also takes place against the backdrop of a major change in Gotham FC's future.
The club currently calls Sports Illustrated Stadium home, but in July Gotham and New York City FC announced that Gotham will leave Harrison for a permanent home in Queens beginning in 2028.
Gotham will play at Etihad Park, the new soccer-specific stadium being constructed in the Willets Point neighborhood of Queens next to Citi Field. The stadium will have approximately 25,000 seats and is scheduled to open in 2027, with Gotham beginning its home schedule there the following year.

The new stadium is being built as New York City's first professional soccer-specific stadium. Gotham will have dedicated facilities there, including its own locker room and merchandise areas. The location will also provide mass-transit access through the nearby Mets-Willets Point station serving the No. 7 subway line and Long Island Rail Road. Gotham already gave fans a preview of its Queens future this summer. The club's July match against the Washington Spirit at Citi Field drew a sellout crowd of 42,175, which Gotham reported as a New York City women's sports attendance record. The move therefore means that the 2026 and 2027 seasons represent the closing chapters of Gotham's tenure as a Harrison-based home team, even as the organization plans to maintain a New Jersey presence through its training operations in Whippany, NJ.

A Big Friday Night for Harrison
Before that move happens, however, Gotham still has important soccer to play in Harrison.
Friday night's contest offers one of the strongest matchups remaining on the club's 2026 home schedule: the first-place team against a Portland side only seven points behind it, two of the NWSL's original franchises reaching a major league milestone, and a Pride Night filled with activities beginning several hours before the opening whistle.

For Gotham, three points would strengthen its grip on the NWSL Shield race before three consecutive road matches. For Portland, a victory in Harrison could dramatically tighten that race.
For fans, the evening begins well before the soccer does.

Fan Fest opens at 5:30 p.m., the Drag Soirée begins at 6 p.m., and Gotham FC and Portland Thorns FC kick off at 8 p.m. Friday at Sports Illustrated Stadium, 600 Cape May Street in Harrison. The match will also be nationally streamed on Prime Video.

Residents and motorists who are not attending the game should take note as well: with Pride Night activities beginning in the late afternoon and an 8 p.m. kickoff, the Harrison Police Department's traffic bulletin is a reminder to expect additional pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the stadium, Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard and the Harrison PATH station before and after Friday night's match. The forecast for Friday does not call for rain so there will be no flooding in the area surrounding the PATH station which is just down the block from the Sports Illustrated Stadium which is good news for commuters and fans.
