In a heartfelt ceremony that united generations, Harrison Post No. 282 American Legion and the Sgt. William Sawelson VFW Post 340 took another step to preserve its proud military legacy by unveiling a new monument honoring the town’s Vietnam War veterans. The dedication was held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Veterans Plaza in Library Park, the Town of Harrison’s sacred ground for remembering its fallen heroes.

The new monument, placed between two existing war memorials, stands as a living testament to courage, sacrifice, and the enduring gratitude of a town that has never forgotten its own. The monument states:

This Monument is Dedicated To All Those From The Town of Harrison

Who Served In The Armed Forces of the United States of America

Their Sacrifice Will Forever Be Remembered.

This year’s Memorial Day tribute, led by the Harrison Post No. 282 American Legion and the Sgt. William Sawelson VFW Post 340, holds special significance. The new addition to Veterans Plaza honors the memory of three young men from Harrison—Joseph P. Mobus, Donald B. Scott, and David Robertson—who answered the call of duty during the Vietnam War and paid the ultimate price.

Their names now rest among images of soldiers in action—photos etched with modern technology that breathe new life into the narrative of the Vietnam War. These haunting and evocative visuals offer not just a glimpse into the battlefield, but an invitation to reflect, to remember, and to learn.

The Harrison Veterans Plaza, already home to monuments commemorating World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War is more than a public space—it is a sanctuary of remembrance. A place where silence speaks louder than words, and where the weight of history is felt with each passing breeze.

For veterans who served, the new monument may stir memories—some painful, others proud. For younger generations, it may spark curiosity and prompt a deeper exploration into the meaning of service, sacrifice, and the complex chapter of American history that was the Vietnam War.

On this Memorial Day 2025,  Harrison pauses to reflect, not just on those who gave their lives, but on all who served. In the shadows of the flags that fly high above Veterans Plaza, this new monument ensures that the story of Harrison’s Vietnam heroes will endure, for today, and for generations to come.
