Remembering Chief John A. Trucillo: A Life of Service and Commitment

Retired Town of Harrison Police Chief John Anthony Trucillo passed on May 19, 2024, at the age of 82. A distinguished figure in the community, his life was marked by an unwavering dedication to service, both as a veteran, as a child psychologist, and law enforcement officer.

Born in Newark, NJ, in 1942, John was the youngest of three sons to Auturo and Theresa Trucillo (née Marrazzo). He embraced a life of service early, serving honorably in the U.S. Army before embarking on a notable career with the Harrison Police Department starting in July 1964. John’s passion for community involvement shone through his roles, particularly as a juvenile aide officer and later as Chief of Police, retiring in 2003 after nearly four decades of commendable service. He remained a long time Town of Harrison resident.

Educational Achievements

John’s educational achievements included a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Education from Seton Hall University. His expertise as a certified school psychologist greatly benefited the children within the Harrison, Kearny, and East Newark public school systems.

Devoted Husband & Father

Chief Trucillo was a loving husband to his wife, Carole (née Navrotski), for 60 years and a devoted father to his children, John, Mario, and the late Gina Pintar. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Ava, Matthew, John Jr., Andrea, and Penelope, who cherished him as “Pop Pop.”

Community Service

A pillar in his community, John was also active on several boards and continued to engage in various community projects, always advocating for quality-of-life improvements.  He gave words of encouragement and mentorship.  A motto he stated to many was "Always do and try your best and don't be afraid to make a mistake. It is how we learn."

Funeral Arrangements

Family, friends, and those whose lives were touched by John are invited to the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Avenue, Harrison, NJ, for visitation on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  A Funeral Mass will be held in his honor at Holy Cross Church, Harrison, at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 5th. John will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ.

Chief Trucillo's warmth, wisdom, and courage have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us. In these moments of sorrow, his message remains a beacon of hope and resilience for the community.
