The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is set to bring convenience right to the doorstep of Harrison residents with its Mobile Unit this coming Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Located in front of the Harrison Senior Citizen Center at 221 Harrison Avenue, the unit will operate from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., providing essential MVC services directly to the community.

Residents of Harrison and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to access several vital services without the usual need to visit a physical MVC office. Services available include upgrading to a Real ID (non-renewal), registration renewal for vehicles with satisfied suspensions or long-expired registrations, and applications for various permits and non-driver IDs.

The MVC Mobile Unit will offer the following services:

  • Real ID Upgrade: Transition from a standard license or ID to a Real ID, which will be required for domestic flights starting May 3, 2025.
  • Registration Renewal: For vehicles previously suspended (now cleared), or with registrations expired for over six months.
  • Permits: Issue of auto examination permits (Class D), motorcycle and moped permits, and boat licenses.
  • Replacement Titles and Registrations: Applications for duplicate or replacement vehicle titles and registrations.
  • Non-Driver ID: Application for IDs for non-drivers aged 14 and above, including an option to downgrade from a Class D license.

Appointments are required and can be made through the New Jersey MVC's TeleGov Scheduling Platform. First, select Type of Appointment followed by selecting Harrison from the locations and then your time slot. This move is part of the MVC’s efforts to make accessing Motor Vehicle Services more flexible and community-centered.

Residents planning to use the Mobile Unit should prepare by gathering the necessary documents to fulfill the MVC’s 6 Points of ID requirement. Accepted documents include a social security card, or in its absence, a 2023 W2 form, a recent pay stub, or a 1099 form. A detailed list of acceptable documents is available on the MVC website and through the linked 6 Points of Identification Worksheet.

The MVC emphasizes the importance of arriving prepared with the appropriate documentation to ensure a smooth and efficient service experience. This proactive initiative by the MVC aims to reduce wait times and improve accessibility for all New Jersey residents needing motor vehicle services.
