League Cup Brings International Soccer to Harrison 8/6 & 8/9/26

Harrison's Sports Illustrated Stadium will become the center of North American soccer this weekend as Major League Soccer's New York City FC hosts two of Mexico's most recognizable clubs in Leagues Cup Phase One competition, beginning Thursday night against Club Santos Laguna and continuing Sunday when Cruz Azul comes to town.

The three-day stretch also includes a National Women's Soccer League matchup Friday evening when NJ/NY Gotham FC hosts the San Diego Wave FC, giving soccer fans in Harrison an opportunity to watch elite men's and women's professional soccer on consecutive days.

According to the published schedule, New York City FC will face Santos Laguna on Thursday, August 6, at 7:30 p.m., Gotham FC hosts San Diego Wave FC on Friday, August 7, at 8 p.m., and New York City FC returns on Sunday, August 9, at 7:30 p.m. to meet Cruz Azul.

An International Tournament Comes to Harrison

Leagues Cup has quickly become one of the premier club competitions in North America by matching clubs from Major League Soccer (MLS) against teams from Liga MX, Mexico's top professional league. The 2026 tournament features 36 clubs competing in a Phase One format before advancing to knockout rounds, with the top finishers earning berths in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.

For local soccer fans, the tournament offers the rare opportunity to watch some of Mexico's most historic clubs without leaving New Jersey.

Who is Club Santos Laguna?

Founded in 1983, Club Santos Laguna is one of Mexico's most successful modern-era clubs. The team represents the city of Torreón, located in the state of Coahuila in northern Mexico.

Santos has captured multiple Liga MX championships and has become well known throughout North America for developing talented players while consistently competing for league titles and international honors.

The club plays its home matches at Estadio Corona, a modern soccer-specific stadium located within the Territorio Santos Modelo sports complex in Torreón. The stadium seats approximately 30,000 spectators and is regarded as one of the finest soccer venues in Mexico.

Santos Laguna also enjoys one of Liga MX's most passionate fan bases, and a sizable contingent of supporters is expected to travel to Harrison for Thursday night's match.

NYCFC Playing Away... at "Home"

Although Thursday's contest is officially listed as a New York City FC home match, many supporters still consider it anything but.

New York City FC has spent much of its existence splitting home games between Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and Citi Field in Queens because the club lacked its own permanent soccer stadium. Scheduling conflicts with baseball have periodically forced NYCFC to move matches elsewhere, including across the Hudson River to Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison.

That venue, however, is the longtime home of the New York Red Bulls—NYCFC's fiercest MLS rival.

For many NYCFC supporters, playing "home" matches inside their rival's stadium has always been an awkward experience. While Sports Illustrated Stadium is widely regarded as one of Major League Soccer's finest soccer-specific venues, its identity remains closely associated with the Red Bulls organization. That situation will soon change.

NJ/NY Gotham FC Leaving NJ Behind

New York City FC is constructing its own soccer-specific stadium in Queens, which is expected to eliminate many of the scheduling conflicts that have required the club to use Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, and occasionally Sports Illustrated Stadium as home venues.

NJ/NY Gotham FC plans to leave the Sports Illustrated Stadium for a venue in New York. Gotham FC has announced that it will leave Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison after the 2027 NWSL season and move to Etihad Park in Willets Point, Queens, New York, beginning with the 2028 season. The announcement was made jointly by Gotham FC and New York City FC on July 7, 2026.

Teams Enter Tournament in Strong Position

As of August 5, New York City FC entered Leagues Cup among the top clubs in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference, sitting near the top of the standings after a strong first half of the MLS season.

Santos Laguna arrives from Liga MX looking to make an early statement in the cross-border tournament. While Liga MX clubs traditionally bring considerable talent and international experience into Leagues Cup competition, every match against MLS opposition is viewed as an important measuring stick between the two leagues. Cruz Azul Arrives Sunday

Sunday's opponent, Cruz Azul, is among the most famous soccer clubs in all of North America.

Founded in 1927, Cruz Azul is based in Mexico City and is one of Liga MX's traditional "big clubs." The organization has won numerous league championships and has enjoyed considerable success in continental competitions.

The club currently plays its home matches at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City while long-term stadium plans continue to evolve.

Known by supporters as La Máquina ("The Machine"), Cruz Azul traditionally attracts one of the largest fan followings in Mexican soccer, meaning Sunday's match could feature a lively atmosphere with supporters from both countries.

Traffic Advisory Expected

Residents should anticipate increased traffic around Sports Illustrated Stadium before and after Thursday's and Sunday's Leagues Cup matches, as well as Friday night's Gotham FC contest.

Although no advisory had been released at the time this article was prepared, the Harrison Police Department has routinely issued traffic bulletins for major soccer events at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Motorists should expect temporary congestion along South Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard, Guyon Drive, Cape May Street, and nearby roadways before kickoff and immediately following each match.
