The weeklong program is open exclusively to Harrison residents entering grades 6 through 8, and space is extremely limited. Early registration is strongly encouraged to ensure participation.

Now in its annual tradition, the Harrison Junior Police Academy offers a unique, hands-on opportunity for local youth to experience the roles, responsibilities, and challenges of law enforcement. The program is part of a nationwide initiative that has successfully introduced thousands of young Americans to the core values of public service, discipline, and civic responsibility.
A Week of Immersive Learning
Past Junior Police Academy sessions have included a dynamic mix of light physical training, drill and ceremony, and interactive presentations from local, county, and state law enforcement agencies. Cadets begin each day at 9 a.m. with morning drills, designed to build teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills.
Throughout the week, cadets have been treated to demonstrations and discussions by specialized law enforcement units, including:
- The Hudson County Regional SWAT Team provides insight into tactical operations and equipment.
- The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, with presentations from its Homicide, Gang, and Crime Scene Units, including fingerprint dusting exercises.
- The Hudson County Sheriff’s K9 Unit, showcases the capabilities of trained police dogs.
- The New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit, whose helicopter landing in Library Park has become a highlight of the program.
Additionally, the Harrison Fire Department collaborates with the academy, introducing cadets to firefighting gear and techniques, and helping them explore another path in public safety.
Field Trips That Inspire and Educate
The Junior Police Academy also includes memorable field trips that reinforce the importance of public service and history:
- A visit to the Newark Police Department’s Mounted Unit, where cadets learn about community policing on horseback.
- A powerful journey to the World Trade Center Memorial in New York City, offering cadets a chance to reflect on the impact of 9/11 and honor those who gave their lives.
Building the Future of Community Policing
The Junior Police Academy serves as a bridge between the Harrison Police Department and the community’s youth. For many cadets, it is their first in-depth look at what it truly means to serve and protect. The program fosters mutual respect, understanding, and even career interest in law enforcement and public safety.
With limited enrollment, this free and impactful summer experience is expected to fill quickly. Parents and guardians are encouraged to act fast to secure a spot for their child.
