The holiday spirit is in full swing in the Borough of East Newark, as Mayor Dina M. Grilo and the Borough Council spearhead a series of heartwarming events designed to bring joy and warmth to residents, especially children in need.

A Season of Giving: Holiday Toy Drive

Leading the charge is the Holiday Toy Drive, a compassionate initiative running until December 15, 2023. Aimed at brightening the lives of children in need, the community is encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys suitable for ages 1 to 13. These gifts will find their way into the hands of delighted children at the Annual Santa’s Workshop, a beacon of hope and joy for the Borough’s youth. Drop-off for these tokens of kindness is at the East Newark Borough Hall, 34 Sherman Avenue, East Newark, NJ.

Santa’s Mailbox: Connecting with the North Pole

In a whimsical and heartwarming twist, Mayor Grilo and the Borough Council, in partnership with none other than Santa Claus himself, have set up a “Letters to Santa” mailbox. This gesture allows children to express their gratitude and holiday wishes, fostering a sense of magic and wonder. Mayor Grilo encourages all to participate, reminding everyone to send their letters by December 13 to ensure a timely response from Santa.

Meet Santa and His Elves: Santa’s Workshop Event

On December 17, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the East Newark Recreation Center will transform into a festive wonderland. At Santa’s Workshop, children from one to 13 years old will have a memorable experience meeting Santa and his elves, with the added delight of receiving a special gift. This event, a collaboration with the East Newark Volunteer Fire Department and Police Department, promises to be a highlight of the season.

Festive Lights and Community Pride: Holiday House Decorating Contest

Adding to the holiday cheer is the 4th Annual Holiday House Decorating Contest. Residents are invited to showcase their festive spirit through creative and illuminative displays. With registration open until December 15, the contest will culminate in an announcement of the winners on December 21, bringing together the community in a vibrant celebration of creativity and holiday spirit. A Bright Start to the Season: Tree Lighting Ceremony

The holiday season in East Newark officially kicked off with the Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 2 at the Borough Hall. This joyous event, as reported by YourHarrison.com, featured Santa Claus, carolers, refreshments by the East Newark Parents Teachers Organization, and special reindeer food treats courtesy of Girl Scouts Troop 2771.
