As we mark the third Sunday of June this year, let us raise our voices and declare, "Happy Father's Day!" On this day, we honor not only our biological fathers but also the father figures who have guided, inspired, and cared for us throughout our lives. The day is a special reminder to acknowledge the invaluable role fathers and father figures play in shaping our lives and society.

The celebration of Father's Day in the United States is largely attributed to the efforts of a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by her father, a Civil War veteran who singlehandedly raised his six children after his wife's death, Dodd felt that there should be a day designated to honor fathers, similar to Mother's Day. She initially proposed the idea in 1909, and the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1909. Although Father’s Day was first celebrated in 1909 and various Presidents of the United States supported making it a Nation Holiday including Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Lyndon B. Johnson. It was President Richard Nixon that made Father’s Day an official national holiday in 1972 after a Bill sponsoring such a designation passed in Congress.

Impact On Economy

Since then, Father's Day has not only become a day of personal celebration and tribute but has also significantly impacted our economy. Just like other holiday periods, Father's Day sees a spike in consumer spending, which greatly benefits certain sectors of the retail business. As per the National Retail Federation, American consumers were expected to spend over $22.9 billion on Father's Day gifts in 2023, with this figure predicted to continue rising annually.

Retail sectors that enjoyed the most boost during this period include electronics, clothing, home improvement items, personal care products, and sporting goods. With the advent of online shopping, e-commerce websites have also reported a considerable increase in sales leading up to Father's Day.

Mother’s Day versus Father’s Day

Interestingly, when we contrast Father's Day with Mother's Day, we notice some disparities. According to retail statistics, consumers tend to spend more on Mother's Day than on Father's Day. This is likely due to the broader range of products available for mothers, such as flowers, jewelry, and beauty products, which often carry a higher price tag. Additionally, Mother's Day has a longer and more deeply ingrained tradition, given that it was officially recognized as a holiday decades before Father's Day.

Despite the differences, both celebrations are rooted in the same sentiment—expressing love, gratitude, and respect toward our parents. While commercial success is an undeniable aspect of these holidays, the true spirit of Father's Day and Mother's Day lies in the personal, heartfelt connections between us and our parents.

This Father's Day, remember to say, "Thank you," and show appreciation to the father figures in your life. It could be through a gift, a meal, a simple phone call, or a warm hug. Let them know that their presence is significant and valued. To all the amazing fathers out there, we wish you a very Happy Father's Day!
