The world’s top rugby sevens teams will take center stage in Harrison this weekend as World Rugby and USA Rugby, in partnership with TEG Rugby Live, host the United States leg of the HSBC SVNS Series at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday, March 14, 2026 and Sunday, March 15, 2026.

The two-day international rugby festival will bring elite national teams and fans from around the world to Harrison and the surrounding West Hudson communities. Saturday’s competition is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., while Sunday’s matches will run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

What Are “HSBC” and “SVNS”?

The tournament name reflects both the sponsor and the format of the competition.

HSBC refers to the title sponsor, HSBC, one of the world’s largest international banking institutions. HSBC has sponsored the global rugby sevens series for more than a decade, helping expand the sport’s global reach.

SVNS, pronounced “Sevens,” is shorthand for the international rugby sevens circuit, a fast-paced version of rugby union played with seven players per side instead of the traditional fifteen. Matches are shorter, faster, and emphasize speed, skill, and open play on a full-size rugby field.

The HSBC SVNS Series is the premier annual international competition organized by World Rugby. The series travels to major host cities around the world, with national teams competing for overall standings points that determine the series champion and qualification pathways for major tournaments, including the Olympic Games.

World’s Top Teams Competing in Harrison

Saturday’s opening day of competition will feature 24 rugby matches involving 11 international men’s teams, including:

  • USA 7s
  • Canada 7s
  • Fiji 7s
  • Argentina 7s
  • Spain 7s
  • Great Britain 7s
  • Australia 7s
  • France 7s
  • South Africa 7s
  • New Zealand 7s
  • Japan 7s

The event also includes elite women’s competition. Entering the New York tournament, New Zealand’s women’s team leads the series standings, closely followed by Australia, while the United States women’s squad sits in third place and will be hoping for a strong showing on home soil.

USA star Kristi Kirshe said fans attending the tournament can expect a lively atmosphere.

Just like the National Football League (NFL) has been trying to grow American Football in Eutrope. World Rugby and USA Rugby, in partnership with TEG Rugby Live are trying to grow Rugby in America. They are bringing out some of the best athletes in the world to America.  Fans can expect a party. These are electric games—full contact, full sprint. It’s really exciting rugby.

Harrison Police Issue Traffic Bulletin

The Harrison Police Department has issued a Traffic and Parking Bulletin for both Saturday and Sunday to accommodate the large crowds expected at the stadium.

On Saturday, traffic is expected to increase significantly throughout the day as fans arrive for the 10 a.m. opening kickoff and remain through the evening matches concluding at approximately 6:30 p.m. The Harrison Police Department has recommend that visitors utilize nearby parking decks, public transportation such as the PATH train at the Harrison PATH Station, and allow extra travel time when entering and leaving the Sports Illustrated Stadium area.

Roadway congestion may also occur on Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard, Harrison Avenue, and nearby streets surrounding the stadium complex as spectators arrive and depart throughout the day.

Potential Traffic Complications on Sunday

Sunday’s tournament schedule could present an additional traffic challenge for Harrison officials and residents.

On the same day, the United Irish Association of West Hudson will hold its annual West Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which traditionally begins in Harrison and travels through East Newark before concluding in Kearny.

The parade typically features floats, marching bands, and apparatus from several local fire departments and police departments, including fire trucks from at least four surrounding municipalities. Participants assemble in Harrison before the parade begins, which can create heavy vehicle activity in the same downtown streets used by stadium visitors.

With the rugby tournament running from 11 a.m. until 5:15 p.m., traffic congestion could occur if large crowds from the stadium coincide with parade staging and post-parade activity in the area.

Past Cooperation Between the Red Bulls and the United Irish Parade

In previous years, the New York Red Bulls organization, has demonstrated flexibility to help avoid major traffic conflicts with the West Hudson parade.

On at least one occasion, the Red Bulls organization moved a scheduled event at the stadium to another date after a request by the United Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee advised them that the Parade would bring thousands of participants and spectators to Harrison on the same day. The change was made specifically to prevent a situation where stadium crowds and parade traffic would overwhelm local streets.

Historically, Red Bulls management had informally designated the first Sunday of the month as a day without stadium events to accommodate the United Irish St. Patrick’s Day.  However, the parade is being held on the third Sunday of March, March 15, 2026, meaning the informal scheduling practice does not align this year.

Need for Coordination Moving Forward

The overlapping schedules this weekend highlight the importance of coordination between stadium management and community organizations.

With international sporting events now regularly being scheduled at Sports Illustrated Stadium, local officials and community groups say it would be beneficial for stadium management and the United Irish Association to formally coordinate which Sunday in March should remain clear of large stadium events.

Better coordination would help ensure that two major events—an international sports tournament and one of the region’s most celebrated Irish heritage parades—can both take place smoothly without creating unnecessary traffic gridlock for residents and visitors in Harrison and neighboring communities.

For fans attending the rugby tournament, officials encourage using public transportation and planning ahead, as Harrison is expected to be one of the busiest places in the region this weekend.
