Travel to Portugal at CRC Portuguese American Community Center

If you want to experience the folk music of Portugal, you need to book your reservation for “Noite de Fados” (A Night of Fado Music) at the Centro Romeu Cascaes Portuguese American Community Center in Harrison NJ.  The event will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2022, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Fados is considered by some the Folk music of Portugal.  The Lyrics to the music are about longing, and feelings of loss.  The Portuguese discovered two-thirds of the world via the sea so you can imagine those who did not take to the sea to explore the world had a sense of loss as they waited for their loved ones to return.  There is a Portuguese word, “Saudades” which is a word that describes a longing for some place or person.  You have to experience the music to get a better understanding of the depth of the melancholy.

The best-known Portuguese Fado singer is Amalia Rodrigues So ask your favorite streaming service to play Amalia Rodrigues to get a feel for what to expect at the Centro Romeu Cascaes.  The Fado singer is accompanied by a string quartet.  Madonna who moved to Lisbon, Portugal stated that her album Madame X was partially influenced by Portugal’s Fado music.

The Fados de Medicina do Porto will be the musical group performing.  They can be found on Facebook.  Below is a video of the full ensemble of players and singers.  A smaller group will be in Harrison Nj.

The Fado night at Centro Romeu Cascaes includes a Family Style Dinner which includes your choice of meat or a fish dish, dessert, Portuguese House wine, Water, or Soda.  A cash bar is available with wine, beer, and mixed drinks.  For those who read Portuguese, the menu is as follows:  Rissois, Chourico e Petingas, Bacaalhau a Lagareiro, Carne Assada, Subremesa, Vinho de Casa, Agua/Sodas.

The cost is $50.00 per person. You should make a reservation by calling (201) 401-0826 and asking to speak with Conceicao.  Reservations are recommended as Fado nights usually sell out.
