Portuguese Heritage Takes Center Stage in Harrison June 6-7
Jun 05, 2026
The vibrant spirit of Portugal will once again fill the streets of Harrison as the Centro Romeu Cascaes Portuguese American Community Center (CRC) hosts its annual Portugal Day Celebration on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, 2026.
One of Harrison's most cherished cultural traditions, the two-day celebration brings together the local Portuguese-American community while welcoming residents of all backgrounds to experience and enjoy Portugal's rich culture, cuisine, music, and heritage.
Located at 14 North Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard, the CRC will serve as the center of activity throughout the weekend, offering authentic Portuguese food, live entertainment, and cultural traditions that have become a hallmark of the annual celebration.
Saturday, June 6: Food, Music, and Fellowship
The festivities begin on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m., giving visitors an opportunity to enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine and spend the day socializing with family and friends.
Among the featured menu items will be barbecued sardines flown in from Portugal and frozen while fresh, a seasonal delicacy that holds a special place in Portuguese culinary tradition. Guests can also enjoy Portuguese barbecue chicken, febras (Portuguese-style pork steaks), and French fries, a favorite among younger attendees.
To complement the food, the CRC will offer homemade sangria, beer, soft drinks, and water.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, a DJ will provide music from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., creating the soundtrack for an afternoon and evening filled with food, drink, and community fellowship.
Sunday, June 7: A Celebration of Heritage and Pride
Sunday's activities begin with a Portuguese Mass at 9 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, located at 323 Harrison Avenue, directly across from Harrison Town Hall.
At 10 a.m., the community will gather at Harrison Town Hall, 318 Harrison Avenue, for the annual Portuguese Flag Raising Ceremony. The ceremony serves as a symbolic expression of heritage, unity, and appreciation for the contributions Portuguese Americans have made to Harrison, the United States, and communities throughout the world.
The Portuguese people played a significant role in the Age of Exploration, with Portuguese navigators helping chart and discover much of the known world. Portugal's influence extended far beyond Europe, including control of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz for more than a century.
Portuguese Flag Raising Ceremony 2026
Following the flag-raising ceremony, attendees are invited back to the CRC for a light breakfast at approximately 11 a.m.
The morning activities will also include the Portuguese Language School Heritage Exhibition, featuring artwork created by students of the Portuguese language school and highlighting the importance of preserving Portuguese culture and language for future generations.
The celebration then continues throughout the afternoon. From 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the CRC will once again serve its popular Portuguese food and beverages while a DJ will keep the festivities going from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., ensuring a lively atmosphere for attendees of all ages.
As part of the longstanding tradition, the Rancho Camponeses do Minho folkloric dance group is expected to perform in front of Town Hall following the flag-raising ceremony. Founded in Harrison, the beloved dance group showcases the music, costumes, and folk traditions of Portugal's Minho region, bringing generations of Portuguese culture to life through dance and performance. It has been for many years the Sports Club Portugues in Newark, NJ (the oldest Portuguese-American Club in the USA).

A Community Leader and Cultural Pillar
The Portugal Day celebration is organized by the Centro Romeu Cascaes Portuguese American Community Center, an organization that has long served as a cultural cornerstone for the Portuguese-American community in Harrison and throughout the West Hudson area.
Earlier this year, longtime CRC President Delfim Sarabando passed leadership of the organization to Nick Azevedo. The transition also included Treasurer Jose "Joe" Rodrigues handing over his responsibilities to Mary Rose Cascaes. While much of the Board of Directors remained unchanged, several new members joined the organization, helping continue the CRC's mission of preserving and promoting Portuguese culture.
Through its educational programs, cultural events, and community outreach efforts, the CRC continues to play an important role in ensuring Portuguese traditions are passed on to future generations.
A Celebrated Harrison Tradition
Portugal Day in Harrison regularly attracts local dignitaries, elected officials, and representatives of the Portuguese government, reflecting the strong and enduring ties between Harrison and Portugal.
The annual celebration stands as a testament to the lasting legacy of the Portuguese-American community, whose contributions have helped shape the cultural fabric of Harrison and the surrounding region.
All are welcome to attend this year's Portugal Day festivities, which promise a weekend filled with great food, music, culture, and tradition in the heart of Harrison.
