Harrison Hydrant Flushing Begins Sept. 14, Continues Six Weeks

Harrison residents may notice temporary changes in water pressure or discoloration in their tap water beginning next week as the Town begins another round of fire hydrant flushing throughout the community.

The Town of Harrison posted a new Hydrant Flushing Notice, announcing that the Harrison Water Department will begin flushing hydrants during the week of September 14, 2026. The program is expected to continue for approximately six weeks, concluding on October 23, 2026.

To minimize the impact on residents and businesses, crews will conduct flushing Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Why Harrison Flushes Its Hydrants

Hydrant flushing is an important part of maintaining a municipal water distribution system. During the process, crews open hydrants and allow water to flow at a high rate through sections of the system.

According to the Town's notice, Harrison conducts the flushing program to remove mineral buildup from water mains, keep the system clean, maintain water-quality standards, and ensure hydrants function properly for fire protection.

The fire-safety component is particularly important. A hydrant that looks normal from the street still needs periodic operation and maintenance to ensure it will function when firefighters need it during an emergency.

The Town's Water and Sewer Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Harrison's water lines, pumps, and hydrants.

Residents May See Discolored Water

One of the most noticeable effects of hydrant flushing can occur inside homes and apartment buildings.

As water moves rapidly through the mains, it can disturb accumulated mineral deposits and sediment. As a result, residents may temporarily experience discolored water or lower-than-normal water pressure while flushing occurs in their neighborhood.

The Town states that the discolored water remains safe to drink. However, residents who notice discoloration may want to run their cold water until it runs clear before using it for drinking, washing clothes, or running a dishwasher. Safe to drink doesn’t mean you should drink Harrison’s water.

Residents may want to check their tap water before starting a load of light-colored or white laundry, particularly in the evening and early morning when flushing is underway nearby.

Second Hydrant-Flushing Program of 2026

This is not Harrison's first hydrant-flushing operation this year. The Town conducted a similar six-week program beginning the week of April 6, 2026, and continuing through May 15. That work was also scheduled Monday through Friday from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.

The newly announced fall program begins September 14 and is scheduled to conclude October 23, giving the Town another opportunity to flush the water distribution system and check hydrant operation before winter.
