Sgt. Ernie Hernandez Honored by Fellow Officers

Feb 16, 2022

The Harrison Police Department honored Sergeant Ernesto “Ernie” Hernandez, a 23-year-old veteran of the department, in several ways this week.  On Thursday, February 10th, Sergeant Hernandez passed in a New York Hospital after a resurgence of cancer that took his life.  Sergeant Hernandez was 51 years old.  The Harrison Police Department did a Final Radio-call ceremony at the Harrison Police Station and posted it on their Facebook page.  There was an Honor Guard inside and outside the Holy Cross Church in Harrison during and after the Funeral Mass.  Police Vehicles and motorcycles from police vehicles from several towns lined Harrison Avenue which was closed to vehicular traffic.  Members of the Harrison Fire Department also participated in various ways including draping a very large American Flag and extending it over the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Frank E. Rodgers Blvd. to honor Sergeant Hernandez.  The Harrison Police Department has also set up an account at Go-Fund me to raise monies for Sergeant Hernandez’s family.  Sergeant Hernandez had fought an earlier bout with cancer and had been in remission before a resurgence that ultimately took his life.

Sergeant Hernandez started his police career in the Newark NJ Police Department before transferring to the Harrison Police Department.  Hernandez joined his older brother Eddie Hernandez in the Department.

Sergeant Hernandez was the son of Hilda and the late Enrique Hernandez, Ernesto was the beloved husband of Jennifer (nee Kane) Hernandez, and loving father of Graciella Hernandez. He was also the dear brother of Eddie Hernandez and his wife Michele, Carmen Parker and her husband Jon, Enrique Hernandez and his wife Alicia, and the late Efrain Hernandez. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Joanne, by many loving nieces and nephews.

Sergeant Hernandez was laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetary in North Arlington, New Jersey.
