Harrison Police Invite Families to National Night Out 2026

On Tuesday, August 4, 2026,  the Harrison Police Department will welcome residents to National Night Out, a community event designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the neighborhoods they serve.

The free event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Harrison Library Park, located between South Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard and North Fifth Street along Harrison Avenue. Residents of all ages are invited to stop by for an evening of family-friendly entertainment, community interaction, and opportunities to meet local police officers in an informal setting.

Sponsored by the Harrison Police Department, the event will feature a variety of attractions including food, fun activities, face painting, bounce houses, snacks, Touch-A-Truck displays, activities for all ages, and a Movie in the Park. The department has also invited local merchants to participate, providing another opportunity for residents to connect with businesses that serve the Harrison community.

Building Stronger Community Relationships

National Night Out is held annually in communities across the United States and is intended to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Rather than meeting officers only during emergencies, the event gives residents a chance to interact with members of the Harrison Police Department in a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere.

The national program encourages neighbors to get to know one another while reinforcing the idea that safe communities are built through cooperation among residents, businesses, local organizations, and law enforcement.

Children often enjoy exploring police, fire, and other emergency vehicles during Touch-A-Truck activities, while families can participate in games, enjoy refreshments, and spend an evening outdoors with neighbors.

A Tradition with National Roots

National Night Out began in 1984 through the National Association of Town Watch, a nonprofit organization dedicated to crime prevention and community engagement.

What started as a simple effort encouraging residents to turn on their porch lights and spend an evening outside has grown into one of the nation's largest community-building events. Today, millions of people in thousands of communities across all 50 states participate each year with block parties, festivals, safety demonstrations, and family activities.

The annual event reinforces the message that crime prevention is a shared responsibility and that strong neighborhoods are created when residents know one another and maintain positive relationships with local law enforcement.

An Evening of Community Engagement

This year's National Night Out coincides as it did last year as well with the Harrison Mayor and Council meeting, which begins at 6:15 p.m. at Harrison Town Hall.

Because the two events overlap, residents have an opportunity to participate in both. Mayor and Council meetings typically last less than an hour, making it possible for residents to attend the public meeting, stay informed about local government, and then take the short one-block walk to Harrison Library Park to join the National Night Out festivities.

Attending both events offers residents the chance to engage with their elected officials at Town Hall before meeting police officers, neighbors, community organizations, and local business representatives at the park.

Whether residents choose to attend one event or both, Tuesday evening provides an opportunity to become more involved in the Harrison community while enjoying a family-friendly summer event.
